Most women I work with already understand the basics.
You know vegetables are good for you, and that protein helps with fullness and strength. You know that extreme diets don’t tend to last.

And yet… something still isn’t clicking.

You might be thinking:

  • “I know what I should be doing – so why does this still feel so hard?”

  • “Why do I keep starting again?”

  • “Shouldn’t I be able to do this without a coach?”

These questions are incredibly common, especially for women in their 40s and 50s.

In fact, I explored this in more detail in a recent episode of the podcast, which you can find here:

Knowing what to do isn’t the same as being able to stick to it

Most women don’t struggle because they lack information.

They struggle because real life gets in the way.

Work is busy. Family comes first. Sleep isn’t always great. Stress is higher than it used to be. And hormonal changes affect appetite, energy and recovery.

On paper, weight loss sounds simple:
eat less, move more, repeat.

But in reality, you’re making dozens of decisions every day about food, exercise, rest and time.

Understandably, that mental load adds up. And when you’re tired or overwhelmed, your brain naturally looks for the easiest option.

Many women respond by trying to be stricter.
They cut more foods, set harsher rules, or push harder with exercise.

That can work briefly – until it becomes unsustainable, and often leads back to what feels like self-sabotage.

As my client Gill found, having support can make an incredible difference.

Why weight loss often feels harder after 40

In your 20s and 30s, you could often be inconsistent and still see results.

But in your 40s and beyond, your body is less forgiving of extremes.

Hormonal changes influence hunger and energy. Recovery takes longer. Muscle loss starts to play a role in our ability to lose fat (and becomes more of a risk when we over-restrict, don’t eat enough protein, and don’t strength train). Stress has a bigger impact on both weight and motivation.

This is why the old “just eat less and move more” approach often feels like it’s stopped working.

It’s not because of reasons often talked about online, like cortisol, ‘starvation mode’, menopause (menopause can definitely make it harder, but it doesn’t mean you can’t lose weight), or lacking the latest new supplement.

It’s because your body – and your life – need a more supportive approach now.

A recent check-in comment from one my online coaching clients.

Why women search for an online weight loss coach

Women usually look for an online weight loss coach because they:

  • Know what to do but struggle to stay consistent

  • Feel stuck in a cycle of starting again

  • Feel guilty or anxious around food

  • Don’t want extreme dieting anymore

  • Want results that actually last

They’re not looking for someone to tell them off or hand them another rigid plan.

They’re looking for support that fits real life.

What a good online weight loss coach actually helps with

Good online weight loss coaching isn’t about perfect meal plans or constant motivation.

A good coach helps you build habits you can keep when things aren’t perfect.

That usually means helping you to:

  • Find a way of eating that works with your life, not against it

  • Strength train in a way that supports your goals, energy, joints and recovery

  • Step out of the all-or-nothing cycle of being “good” then giving up

  • Handle emotional eating with understanding rather than guilt

  • Stay consistent when motivation dips or life gets busy

Over time, this builds confidence and self-trust.
You stop second-guessing yourself and jumping between plans, because you’re learning what actually works for you.

“But I should be able to do this on my own”

This thought comes up a lot – and it makes sense.

We’re often taught that discipline means doing everything by yourself. But in most areas of life, we don’t think twice about getting support. We use tutors, accountants, mechanics and coaches when we want help progressing. The best athletes in the  world have coaches for a reason.

But with food and exercise, many women feel that needing help means they’ve failed.

In reality, support usually removes the friction that keeps causing you to restart. It doesn’t mean you’re incapable. It means you’re choosing not to do it the hardest possible way.

How online coaching feels different from doing it alone

Many women worry that coaching will feel like pressure or judgement.

Interestingly, what my clients often experience is the opposite. My coaching very often involves helping clients put less pressure on themselves, and stop judging themselves so harshly when they slip up. And this actually leads to far better results.

They have a plan, but it isn’t rigid.
They feel less guilty around food.
When a week isn’t perfect or the scales spike up, with support they don’t panic – they have the reassurance and encouragement to keep going.
Progress feels calmer, steadier, and enjoyable, rather than dramatic and then disappearing.

Instead of thinking, “I’ve messed up, I may as well give up,”
they start thinking, “What’s the next best step?”

That shift is what creates long-term change.

Accountability isn’t about being told off

When people hear the word accountability, they often imagine being checked up on or judged.

Good accountability is supportive.

It gives you space to talk through what didn’t go to plan.

It helps you pause and find useful insights, rather than feel like you’ve failed and quit.

And it helps you notice patterns – like always struggling when work gets stressful.

Over time, that awareness makes change feel easier, not harder. You’re no longer relying on motivation alone. You’re learning how to adjust when life gets in the way.

One more example of the benefits of having a coach.

So… do you need an online weight loss coach?

Not everyone does.

But online weight loss coaching is often a good fit if you:

  • Are a woman in your 40s, 50s or 60s

  • Know what to do but struggle to stay consistent

  • Realise that mindset is a big part of what’s holding you back

  • Want to build a better relationship with food and stop feeling guilty about what you eat

  • Want help to find the missing link for you to lose weight and finally be able to keep it off for good

Coaching isn’t about being told what to eat.
It’s about having someone in your corner while you build habits that actually last.

If this sounds like you

If you’ve been trying to figure this out on your own for a long time and keep ending up back at the start, you’re not alone.

Often it isn’t about trying harder or being stricter. It’s about having the right structure and support in place.
