How Mandy Lost Weight, Built Strength and Felt Fabulous in Time for Turning 50

Many women in their 40s, 50s and 60s find themselves frustrated when it comes to sustainable weight loss. If you can relate, you’re not alone. Maybe you’ve discovered that diet plans that worked in your 20s and 30s don’t seem to have the same effect anymore. Hormonal changes, a busy life, and years of yo-yo dieting can make fat loss significantly harder and leave you feeling stuck.

That was exactly how Mandy felt when she first got in touch with me.

Approaching her 50th birthday, she was fed up with going on and off diets, losing some weight, then regaining it. What she really wanted was sustainable weight loss – a way of eating and living that felt healthy, enjoyable, and long-term.

In a recent podcast interview, Mandy shared her journey.

It’s brilliant, and I highly recommend checking it out. You’ll hear about the struggles she faced, the steps she took, and how she now feels stronger, healthier, and happier than she has in years.

Mandy’s story is packed with lessons that can help any woman looking to lose weight and feel her best during midlife.

Please do check out the episode to hear the lady herself. In the meantime, let’s go over some of her story here, and I’ll share a few quotes from the episode along the way.

The Frustration of Yo-Yo Dieting

Like many women, Mandy had tried different diets over the years. They all gave results at first, but none of them lasted.

“I’d go on a plan, lose a bit of weight, then life would get busy and I’d slip back into old habits,” she explained.

The problem wasn’t Mandy. The problem was the diets. They were too rigid, too focused on restriction, and didn’t fit into her real life.

This is a common theme I hear from women over 40. It’s not about trying harder – it’s about finding an approach you can stick to.

Shifting to Sustainable Weight Loss Habits

Instead of another short-term plan, Mandy started focusing on small, sustainable changes:

  • Eating protein at each meal to stay full and support muscle

  • Building balanced meals with veg, wholegrains, and healthy fats

  • Spending a bit of time tracking her nutrition to help her understand how to lose weight while also enjoying her life

  • Keeping her daily steps up, and adding in consistent strength training

These habits gave her more energy, kept hunger under control, and helped her feel in charge of her choices rather than trapped by a diet.

They also led to some fantastic results. Below is a screenshot of what Mandy sent me on WhatsApp – a progress graph of her weight over the last few years. That high point in 2025 is the point at which she started online coaching 🙂

How Strength Training Was a Game Changer

One of the biggest turning points for Mandy was starting strength training for the first time.

“I never thought I’d enjoy strength training, but now I love it. I can feel myself getting stronger, and that gives me such a buzz.”

This is so powerful. Many women worry that lifting weights will make them bulky. But in reality, we don’t have the testosterone levels to get big and bulky by accident. In reality, strength training helps with:

  • Preserving and building muscle mass, which naturally declines with age

  • Boosting metabolism (making fat loss easier)

  • Strengthening bones and joints to prevent injuries and osteoporosis

  • Improving posture, confidence, and energy

For Mandy, it wasn’t just about how her body changed. It was about the mindset shift that came from realising what her body could do.

“Every week I’d notice I was lifting a bit more or moving a bit easier. That gave me motivation to keep going.”

Ditching the “All or Nothing” Approach

Another key shift for Mandy was letting go of perfection. In the past, one “bad” meal would make her feel like she’d failed. Now, she learned to see food choices in context.

“If I had a meal out or a slice of cake, I didn’t beat myself up anymore. I just got back to my normal meals the next day. That was huge for me.”

This flexible mindset is essential for menopause weight loss and beyond. Restrictive diets create stress and guilt. A balanced approach allows you to enjoy social events, family meals, and holidays without derailing your progress.

Results That Go Beyond the Scales

Yes, Mandy lost weight – but her biggest wins were in how she felt:

  • More energy to enjoy life and keep up with her family

  • Improved fitness and strength she never thought possible

  • Confidence in her body that she hadn’t felt in years

  • Freedom from dieting cycles and guilt around food

“I feel like I’ve got my life back. I’m healthier and happier than I’ve been in years.”

These kinds of results are what happen when you switch from chasing a quick fix to focusing on building strength, healthy habits, and finding balance.

Mandy’s Advice to Women Over 40 Looking for Sustainable Weight Loss

When I asked Mandy what she would say to other women in their 40s or 50s who are struggling, her words were simple but powerful:

“Don’t wait. Just start. Even if it feels small, those little changes add up. And get support – it makes such a difference.”

It doesn’t matter if you haven’t exercised in years, or if you’ve tried every diet under the sun. Change is possible – and it often starts with one small step.

Key Lessons from Mandy’s Story

If you’re a woman in your 40s, 50s, or beyond, here are some of the biggest takeaways you can apply:

  • Focus on consistency, not perfection. A missed workout or a slice of cake isn’t failure – what matters is what you do most of the time.

  • Prioritise protein and balanced meals. This helps manage hunger, support muscle, and stabilise energy.

  • Start strength training. It’s one of the most effective things you can do for fat loss, bone health, and confidence.

  • Build daily movement. Walking, stretching, and moving your body often matter more than long gym sessions.

  • Get accountability and support. Whether from a coach, a group, or a friend, having someone in your corner makes the journey easier.

Final Thoughts on How to Create Sustainable Weight Loss

Mandy’s story shows that it’s absolutely possible to achieve sustainable weight loss after 40 (in fact, at nearly 50). You don’t need another strict diet. You need simple, consistent habits, the right kind of exercise, and a mindset that allows balance and enjoyment.
